Community Music: The Gotham City Music Collective's Spring Choral Showcase

Updated: Jun 14

NEW YORK- In the heart of Manhattan, amidst its bustling streets, lies a sanctuary of harmony and community - St. Paul's German Evangelical Lutheran Church. On the evening of May 31st, 2024, this historic venue played host to an unforgettable musical event: The Gotham City Music Collective's Spring Choral Showcase.

The Gotham City Choir is a collective of passionate musicians and music educators, led by their talented directors Mary Goebel, Laurel Stinson, and Victor Martinez, whose voices blend in perfect harmony to captivate audiences and stir souls. The evening's program also featured Mezzo, a New York City–based all-female a cappella group and member of the Contemporary A Cappella League, MTA's Music Under New York program, and official music partner of the Women's Education Project.

But the magic didn't end there. One of the highlights of the evening was the performance of Cantique de Jean Racine, a timeless masterpiece by Gabriel Fauré. From the hauntingly beautiful melodies to the soaring crescendos, every note seemed to reverberate through the hallowed halls of St. Paul's, transporting listeners to another realm. The Gotham City Music Collective went above and beyond in providing a special treat for the audience; as Debra Bell, Founder and Executive Director of Mics & Stripes, was given the opportunity to play violin within a small string ensemble created by Victor Martinez to accompany the choir during the performance. Together with Jeremy Roberts, Henry Oliver, Hannah Santisi, Katie Chambers, and Jessica Stoll, they achieved Martinez's vision of adding depth and richness to Cantique de Jean Racine, with melodies from live instruments weaving seamlessly between the choir's voices to create an ethereal tapestry of sound.

For Debra, the opportunity to perform alongside the Gotham City Choir was an honor and an opportunity to join non-professional music groups & a mutually supportive foundation like GCMC that aims to strengthen the future and accessibility of community music. In a world often fraught with division and discord, events like the Gotham City Music Collective's Spring Choral Showcase serve as a reminder of the power of music to bring people together, bridge gaps and foster connections that transcend language and culture.
